Raisa Maximovna Gorbacheva (Russian: Раи́са Макси́мовна Горбачёва tr. Raisa Maksimovna Gorbachyova, born Titarenko; 5 January 1932 – 20 September 1999) was an important woman in the Soviet Union. She was known for her work as an activist and for helping others. She was married to Mikhail Gorbachev, who was the leader of the Soviet Union. This made her the First Lady of the Soviet Union from October 1988 to December 1991.

Early Life and Education
Raisa Titarenko was born on January 5, 1932. Her birthplace was Rubtsovsk, a town in the Altai Krai region of Russia. She grew up in the Soviet Union.
She went to Moscow State University, a very famous university. There, she studied philosophy, which is about big ideas and how we think. This education helped her later in life.
Life as First Lady
When her husband, Mikhail Gorbachev, became the leader, Raisa Gorbacheva became the First Lady. This was from 1988 to 1991. She was different from past First Ladies of the Soviet Union. She often appeared in public with her husband. She also took part in many important events.
Raisa Gorbacheva used her position to support many good causes. She worked to help people and to promote culture. She was involved in charities and programs that helped children and improved education. She also helped preserve Russian culture and heritage.

Later Years and Legacy
After her husband left office, Raisa Gorbacheva continued her work. She focused on helping those in need. She started the Raisa Maximovna Club. This club worked to improve the lives of women in Russia.
In October 1993, she had a stroke. Later, she was diagnosed with leukemia, a serious illness. She passed away on September 20, 1999, in Münster, Germany. She was 67 years old.
Raisa Gorbacheva is remembered for her active role. She showed the world a new image of a Soviet First Lady. She used her influence to support many important social and cultural projects.
