Raja Pervaiz Ashraf (born 26 December 1950) is a Pakistani politician. He has held two very important jobs in Pakistan. He was the 17th Prime Minister of Pakistan from June 2012 to March 2013. Later, he became the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan from April 2022 to March 2024.
Before becoming Prime Minister, he was the Minister for Water and Power. This was in the government led by Yousaf Raza Gillani. Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is a senior leader in the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). This party is from the Rawalpindi District.
One big goal during his time as Prime Minister was to develop new hydro projects. These projects help create electricity from water. A key project was the 970-MW Neelum-Jhelum project. The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) also started many other projects. These were in Gilgit–Baltistan.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf's Early Life
Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was born on 26 December 1950. His birthplace was Sanghar, in Sindh, Pakistan. He went to the University of Sindh and finished his studies in 1970. Before joining politics, he worked in agriculture.
He is married to Nusrat Pervaiz Ashraf. They have four children, two sons and two daughters. His family is from Gujar Khan. This is a town in the Rawalpindi District. His family has a history in politics. An uncle of his was a minister in the 1960s. Raja Pervaiz Ashraf speaks many languages. These include English, Urdu, Punjabi, Potwari, and Sindhi.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is a very loyal leader in the Pakistan Peoples Party. He ran in elections for parliament several times. He won in 2002 and again in 2008. After winning in 2008, he became the federal minister for water and power.
Serving in Parliament
Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has been elected as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan (MNA) twice. He represents his area, Gujar Khan. He won his re-election in February 2008. As an MNA, he worked on important committees. These included committees on Kashmir and on Law and Justice. He was also the secretary general of the PPP.
Work as Water and Power Minister
He became the head of the Water and Power Ministry in 2008. This was part of a group of parties that formed the government. During his time, Pakistan faced a big problem with electricity. There were often power cuts, called load shedding. He worked hard to solve this issue.
Despite challenges, about 3,570 megawatts of power were added to the national grid. A large part of this happened when he was minister. He focused on hydro power projects. These projects use water to make electricity. Hydro power is the cheapest way to get energy. He gave special attention to projects like Neelum Jhelum 970 MW. He also started projects in Gilgit Baltistan. These included the Satpara Dam and the Diamer-Bhasha Dam.

Becoming Prime Minister
On 22 June 2012, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was chosen as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan. He and his team took their oath on the same day. His election helped bring stability back to the government.
Tackling National Challenges
After becoming Prime Minister, Ashraf said his main focus would be on the economy. He also wanted to fix inflation and the country's power crisis. He held a meeting right away to deal with the energy problem. He wanted to make sure power plants got enough fuel. This would add more electricity to the national grid.
He also announced plans to build small dams across the country. These dams would help create more energy. He also focused on improving the law and order situation in Karachi.
In September 2012, he announced a development package for Gilgit-Baltistan. This package was worth 2 billion Rs..
Working with Other Parties
Soon after his election, Ashraf met with leaders of other political parties. He visited the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in Karachi. He also met with the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (F). These meetings helped strengthen ties with other parties in the government.
He also approved the creation of a Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan position. This was to meet a request from the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) (PML-Q) party. Chaudhry Pervez Elahi became the first deputy prime minister. This role is mostly symbolic.
Pakistan's Place in the World
When talking about foreign policy, Ashraf said he wanted to work with the United States as equals. He received congratulations from leaders around the world. These included Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India and Chinese government officials. Hillary Clinton from the U.S. and Afghan president Hamid Karzai also sent good wishes.
He spoke about the Kashmir conflict with India. He said Pakistan would keep supporting the people of Jammu and Kashmir. This support would continue until a fair solution is found.
He also visited Kabul, Afghanistan. There, he talked with Afghan leaders about peace in Afghanistan. His first official trip as Prime Minister was to Saudi Arabia. He met with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. They discussed the strong relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
After Being Prime Minister
On 16 April 2022, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was elected as the 22nd Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan. He was chosen without anyone opposing him.
