Rajko Đurić (Serbian Cyrillic: Рајко Ђурић, Romani: Raiko Juric; October 3, 1947 – November 2, 2020) was a Serbian Romani writer and academic. He was also active in politics, leading one of the Romani parties in Serbia, called the Roma Union of Serbia.

About Rajko Đurić
Rajko Đurić was born on October 3, 1947, in Malo Orašje, a town in Serbia. This was when Serbia was part of a country called SFR Yugoslavia.
His Education and Early Career
He studied philosophy at the University of Belgrade from 1967 to 1972. Later, in 1986, he earned a special degree called a Doctorate in Sociology. His big research paper was about the culture of Romani people in Yugoslavia.
In 1991, he moved to Berlin to avoid the conflicts happening in Yugoslavia at that time.
His Work as a Writer and Filmmaker
Rajko Đurić was a very busy writer. He wrote more than 500 articles and 34 books! His books have been translated into more than five languages, meaning people all over the world could read his work.
He also helped make movies. He worked on the film I Even Met Happy Gypsies (also known as Skupljaci perja) with director Aleksandar Petrović. He also helped write the film Time of the Gypsies (Dom za vešanje) with Emir Kusturica.
Before he left Yugoslavia, he was the main editor for the culture section of a newspaper called Politika in Belgrade. He was also the President of the International Romani Union and the General Secretary of the Romani Centre of International PEN, which is an organization for writers. In 2011, he helped start a Romani academy of arts and sciences in Belgrade and was its president until he passed away.
His Political Life
Rajko Đurić cared deeply about the Romani people in Serbia and worked to protect their interests in politics.
In the 2007 Serbian parliamentary election, he led a group of 249 candidates for the Roma Union of Serbia party. He received enough votes (17,128 votes) to be elected to the National Assembly of Serbia, which is like the country's parliament.
In the 2008 Serbian presidential election, he supported the person who was already president, Boris Tadić. Later, in the early 2008 Serbian parliamentary election, Rajko Đurić again led the list of candidates for the Roma Union of Serbia.
Rajko Đurić passed away on November 2, 2020, in Belgrade. He was 73 years old.
