Ralph Coates (born 26 April 1946 – died 17 December 2010) was an English professional footballer. He played as a winger, which is a player who mostly plays on the sides of the field. Ralph Coates played for famous teams like Burnley, Tottenham Hotspur, and Orient. He played in 480 games in the Football League. From 1970 to 1971, he also played for the England national team four times.

Playing for Clubs
Ralph Coates was born in Hetton-le-Hole, England. He started his football journey at Burnley in 1961. He became a professional player in 1963. His first game for the main team was in December 1964. He scored his first goal in March 1965, helping Burnley win 2–0 against Leicester City.
Coates played 261 games for Burnley and scored 32 goals. In 1971, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham paid £190,000 for him, which was a lot of money back then! He played over 300 games for Tottenham.
While at Tottenham, he won two big trophies. He helped them win the 1971–72 UEFA Cup and the 1972–73 Football League Cup. He even scored the winning goal in the 1973 League Cup final.
In 1978, Coates left Tottenham. He played a short time for St George in Australia. Then he came back to England to play for Orient. He also worked as a coach there. He played 84 games for Orient and scored 12 goals.
Ralph Coates stopped playing professional football in 1982. But he still played for smaller, non-league teams like Hertford Heath, Ware, and Nazeing.
Playing for England
Ralph Coates played for England's national teams several times. He played eight games for the England Under-23 team. He also played four games for the main England team.
He was part of the first group of players chosen for the 1970 FIFA World Cup squad. However, he was not picked for the final team that went to Mexico.
Life After Football
After his football career, Ralph Coates worked in different jobs. He became a travel agent. Later, he managed sports and fun centers in places like Chelmsford and Boreham Wood.
He stayed connected with Tottenham Hotspur for more than 20 years. He worked as a host on match days, welcoming people to the games. He also helped coach football for children with disabilities, which was a very kind thing to do.
His Passing
In December 2010, Ralph Coates became very unwell. He passed away on 17 December 2010, at the age of 64.
