The 1971–72 UEFA Cup was the very first time the UEFA Cup competition was held! It took the place of an older tournament called the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
This exciting football event was won by an English team, Tottenham Hotspur. They played against another English team, Wolverhampton Wanderers, in the final. Tottenham Hotspur won by a score of 3–2 over two games, which is called winning "on aggregate."
The tournament was open to top European football teams that hadn't already qualified for the biggest competitions, like the European Cup or the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. It started on September 14, 1971, and the final match was played on May 17, 1972.
The player who scored the most goals in this first UEFA Cup was Ludwig Bründl from Eintracht Braunschweig. He scored an amazing ten goals!
