A Confusing Match Call
Lau van Ravens was the referee for a memorable European Cup Winners' Cup match in November 1971. This game was between Glasgow Rangers and Sporting Lisbon. After the normal 90 minutes, Sporting was winning 3-2. After extra time, Sporting was still ahead 4-3.
Rangers had won their first game at home 3-2. This meant the total score was tied, but Rangers should have won because of the "away goals" rule. However, van Ravens mistakenly ordered a penalty shootout. Sporting won the shootout 3-0. Later, the UEFA organization stepped in. They decided that Rangers had actually won the match based on the away goals rule.
Big Games He Refereed
Lau van Ravens was chosen to referee some very important football finals.
European Finals
He was the referee for two major European Cup finals:
- The 1969 European Cup Winners' Cup Final in Basel. This match was between Slovan Bratislava and FC Barcelona from Spain.

Dutch Cup Finals
Van Ravens also refereed the final matches of the KNVB Cup, which is a big football tournament in the Netherlands. He was in charge of the finals in 1967 and 1971. For the 1971 final, the two teams playing even asked him to referee the replay match after the first game ended in a 2-2 draw!
World Cup Adventures
At the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Lau van Ravens refereed two matches:
- A first-round game between West Germany and Morocco. In this match, he started the second half without realizing that the Moroccan goalkeeper was not yet on the field!
- A quarter-final match between the Soviet Union and Uruguay. In this game, he mistakenly allowed Uruguay's winning goal, which caused some debate.
His very last game as a referee was a special farewell match for famous player Coen Moulijn. This game was between Feyenoord and the Uruguay national team on 9 June 1972.
Life Off the Field
Outside of football, Lau van Ravens worked as a salesman for the Oranjeboom brewing company, which makes beer. He was married two times and had two children. He passed away in Rijswijk, Netherlands, when he was 96 years old.
