The 1972 UEFA Cup Final was the very first final of the UEFA Cup. This big football match was played between two teams from England: Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers. It was a special event because it was the first time in a major UEFA competition that two teams from the same country played against each other in the final!

Journey to the Final Match

Both Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers had to play many games to reach the final. They faced teams from different countries across Europe.

Tottenham Hotspur started their journey by beating Keflavík from Iceland. They then went on to defeat teams like Nantes from France, Rapid București from Romania, and UTA Arad, also from Romania. In the semi-finals, they had a tough match against A.C. Milan from Italy, but they won to secure their spot in the final.

Wolverhampton Wanderers also had a challenging path. They played against Académica from Portugal and ADO Den Haag from the Netherlands. They also beat Carl Zeiss Jena from East Germany. In the quarter-finals, they faced the famous Italian team Juventus and won. Their semi-final match was against Ferencváros from Hungary, which they also won to reach the final.

The Final Matches

The 1972 UEFA Cup Final was played over two matches, one at each team's home stadium. This is called a "two-legged" final.

First Match: Wolverhampton

The first match was held at Molineux, the home stadium of Wolverhampton Wanderers, on 3 May 1972. A large crowd of 38,362 fans came to watch.

In this first game, Tottenham Hotspur won 2-1. Martin Chivers scored both goals for Tottenham. Jim McCalliog scored the only goal for Wolverhampton Wanderers. This result gave Tottenham an advantage going into the second match.

Second Match: London

The second match took place two weeks later, on 17 May 1972, at White Hart Lane, Tottenham Hotspur's home ground in London. Even more fans attended this game, with 54,303 people watching.

The second match ended in a 1-1 draw. Alan Mullery scored for Tottenham, and Dave Wagstaffe scored for Wolverhampton. Because Tottenham had won the first match 2-1, and the second match was a draw, Tottenham Hotspur won the final with a total score of 3-2 over both games. This made them the first-ever winners of the UEFA Cup!
