Stephen John Perryman (born on December 21, 1951) is a famous English former footballer. He played as a defender or midfielder. He is most known for his amazing time with Tottenham Hotspur in the 1970s and early 1980s.
During his 17 years at Tottenham, he won the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Cup twice each. In 1982, Perryman was named the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year. He also holds the club record for the most first-team games played, with 854 appearances. From 2003 until 2018, he was the director of football at Exeter City.

Playing Career Highlights

Steve Perryman was born in Ealing, Middlesex, England. He started as a midfielder and later became a defender. He played a record 866 games for Tottenham Hotspur between 1969 and 1986. This made him their longest-serving player ever.
During his 17 years with the North London club, Perryman won many awards. He helped Tottenham win the UEFA Cup in 1972 and 1984. He also won the League Cup in 1971 and 1973. He was the captain when Tottenham won the FA Cup two years in a row, in 1981 and 1982. In 1982, he was also voted the best footballer by the Football Writers' Association.
Perryman did not score many goals, but he scored two important goals in a 2–1 win against AC Milan in 1972. This was during the UEFA Cup semi-final. Tottenham went on to win that competition.
After leaving Tottenham, Perryman played for Oxford United in 1986. He then became a player-manager for Brentford in the same year. He stopped playing football in 1990.
Coaching and Management Roles
After his playing career, Steve Perryman became a football manager. He managed Watford from 1990 to 1993. He helped them avoid being moved down to a lower league.
He also managed teams in other countries. He worked with Start in Norway in 1995. Later, he managed Shimizu S-Pulse (1999–2000) and Kashiwa Reysol (2001–2002) in Japan. He even briefly managed Tottenham Hotspur as a temporary coach in 1994.
As a coach, he won the J.League stage championship in 1999 with Shimizu S-Pulse. He also won the Asian Cup Winners Cup with them in 2000. After this, he helped Exeter City stay in their league. He then returned to Japan to manage Kashiwa Reysol again.
From 2003 to 2018, Perryman was the director of football for Exeter City. In May 2012, he had heart surgery after feeling unwell at a game. He later said that the quick medical help at the stadium saved his life. He spent three weeks in a coma recovering.
In January 2018, Perryman announced he would retire from Exeter City. However, in August 2018, he joined MK Dons as an associate director. He stayed there until November 2019.
International Appearances
Steve Perryman played 17 games for the England Under-23 team. He made one appearance for the main England team. This was on June 2, 1982, against Iceland. He came on as a substitute in the 70th minute. This game was later made an official international match, so Perryman earned his cap.
Personal Life and Awards
Steve Perryman has been married twice and has four children. He is good friends with another famous footballer, Ossie Ardiles. He lives in Kington St Michael.
In 1986, he was given the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) award. This award was for his great contributions to football.
