Stephen John Perryman (born on December 21, 1951) is a famous English former footballer. He played as a defender or midfielder. He is best known for his amazing time with Tottenham Hotspur in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Steve Perryman won many important trophies with Tottenham. He won the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Cup all twice! He played for the club for 17 years. In 1982, he was even voted the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year. He holds a club record for playing in 854 first-team games for Tottenham. After his playing career, he worked as a director of football at Exeter City for many years.

Steve Perryman was born in Ealing, Middlesex. He started as a midfielder and later became a defender. He played an incredible 866 games for Tottenham Hotspur between 1969 and 1986. This makes him their longest-serving player ever!

During his 17 years with the club, he won many awards. He helped Tottenham win the UEFA Cup in 1972 and again in 1984. He also won the League Cup in 1971 and 1973. He was the captain when Tottenham won the FA Cup two years in a row, in 1981 and 1982. In 1982, football writers chose him as the best player of the year.

Even though he didn't score many goals, he scored two important ones in a 2–1 win against AC Milan in 1972. This helped Tottenham reach the UEFA Cup final, which they then won.

After leaving Tottenham, Steve Perryman played for Oxford United and then for Brentford. At Brentford, he was a player and a manager at the same time. He stopped playing football in 1990.

Life as a Coach

After retiring as a player, Steve Perryman became a football manager. He managed Watford from 1990 to 1993. He also managed teams in other countries, like Start in Norway in 1995. Later, he went to Japan to manage Shimizu S-Pulse (1999–2000) and Kashiwa Reysol (2001–2002). He even briefly managed Tottenham Hotspur in 1994.

As a coach, he won the J.League stage championship in Japan in 1999 with Shimizu S-Pulse. He also won the Asian Cup Winners Cup with them in 2000. After that, he worked at Exeter City to help them improve.

Between 2003 and 2018, Perryman was the director of football for Exeter City. In 2012, he had heart surgery but recovered well. He later said that the quick medical help at the football ground saved his life. In 2018, he announced he would retire from Exeter City. However, he later joined MK Dons as an associate director.

Playing for England

Steve Perryman played 17 games for the England U23 team. He also played one game for the main England squad. This happened on June 2, 1982, when he came on as a substitute against Iceland. This game was later made an official international match, so he earned his England cap.

Outside of Football

Steve Perryman has been married twice and has four children. He is good friends with another famous footballer, Ossie Ardiles. He lives in Kington St Michael.

In 1986, he was given the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This award was given to him for his great contributions to football.
