Ramiro Garcés (in Basque: Ramiro Gartzia) was the very first King of Viguera. He ruled from when the kingdom was created in 970 until he died in 981.
Ramiro was the oldest son of García Sánchez I of Pamplona, who was the King of Pamplona. His mother was Teresa of León.
Becoming King of Viguera
Ramiro's father, King García Sánchez I, decided to give Ramiro the region of Viguera. He also gave him the title of king. This made Ramiro the first ruler of this new kingdom.
Even though he was a king, Ramiro was still a ruler under his older brother, Sancho II of Pamplona. His brother was the main King of Pamplona.
Battles and Death
In 975, King Ramiro tried to attack a nearby Muslim area. However, his army was defeated in a battle called the Battle of Estercuel. This happened on July 6th.
Ramiro Garcés died in 981. The exact date is not fully known. Some old records from that year say he had already passed away.
Arabic writings tell us that he died in the Battle of Torrevicente in 981. In this battle, he and García Fernández of Castile fought against a powerful leader named Almanzur.
His Children
Ramiro had two known children: Sancho and García. Both of his sons later became King of Viguera after him.
