Sancho Ramírez (who spoke Basque, where his name was Antso Ramirez) was the second King of Viguera. He ruled from 981 until around the year 1002, when he passed away. He was the oldest son of Ramiro Garcés, who was the very first king of Viguera. Sancho was also the grandson of García Sánchez I of Pamplona.
Sancho Ramírez: King of Viguera
We don't know a lot about Sancho Ramírez's time as king in Viguera. After his father, Ramiro Garcés, died, Sancho started appearing in important documents. He was often seen with his uncle, Sancho II Garcés, and his brother, García Ramírez.
For a long time, people thought Sancho Ramírez died around the year 999. However, a new document was found that shows he was still alive in 1002! This document is very interesting because it suggests Sancho might have ruled over a larger area than just Viguera for a short time. This was similar to how Jimeno Garcés of Pamplona ruled Pamplona when García Sánchez I was very young. The document from 1002 is the last time we hear about Sancho Ramírez, so historians believe he died soon after that.
His Family and Successor
There was a woman named Sancha Sánchez who appeared in important royal papers in Pamplona. Some people think she might have been Sancho Ramírez's daughter, but we don't know what happened to her later.
After Sancho Ramírez died, his brother, García Ramírez, became the next king of Viguera.
