Ramiro's Family Background
Ramiro's father was Sancho Garcés. Sancho was the son of King García Sánchez III of Navarre. This made Ramiro a relative of the royal family.
His mother was a woman named Constance. Some historians believe she might have been the daughter of Queen Estefanía. If so, she would have been Ramiro's father's stepsister.
Growing Up in a Divided Kingdom
After his uncle, King Sancho IV of Navarre, died, the kingdom was split. It was divided between the Kingdom of Castile and the Kingdom of Aragon. The royal family members were then shared between these two kingdoms.
Ramiro grew up at the court of Aragon. He became the lord of Monzón. Later, his oldest son, García Ramírez of Navarre, took over this role. García Ramírez would eventually become a king himself.
Did Ramiro Join the First Crusade?
Some old stories say that Ramiro went on the First Crusade. This was a big religious war to take back the Holy Land. However, it is very unlikely that he actually went.
The First Crusade was not even called until late 1095. So, Ramiro could not have left for it in March 1095 as some stories claim. Also, if he had gone, he would have stayed with the Christian army. They fought until they captured Jerusalem in 1099.
But records show Ramiro was in Valencia around 1098. He was getting married there. In July 1099, he was helping to move the body of El Cid. This means he was not in the Holy Land at that time.
Building a Church
Ramiro started building a church called Santa María de La Piscina. This church was finished and officially opened in 1137.
Ramiro's Marriage and Children
Around 1098, Ramiro Sánchez married Cristina Rodríguez. She was the daughter of a famous Spanish warrior known as El Cid.
Ramiro and Cristina had two children:
- García Ramírez: He later became the King of Navarre. He is sometimes called "the Restorer."
- Elvira: She married a count named Rodrigo Gómez. They had a son named Gonzalo Ruiz of Bureba.
