Ramón Nouvilas y Rafols was an important Spanish military leader. He also served as the Minister of War for a short time in 1873.

Early Military Career

Ramón Nouvilas started his military journey during the First Carlist War. This was a conflict in Spain where different groups fought for control. He was wounded several times during these battles. Because of his bravery, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

In 1841, he was involved in an attempt to take the Royal Palace in Madrid. This plan failed, and he had to leave Spain and go to France. He returned to Spain in June 1843. After coming back, he was promoted to colonel. He led the Castile Regiment and fought against various political groups in Galicia and Catalonia.

Important Roles and Exiles

Nouvilas became a high-ranking military official in 1862. In 1866, he was sent away to the Canary Islands. This happened because he was part of revolutionary attempts led by Juan Prim.

He played a big part in the success of the Revolution of 1868. This revolution changed the government in Spain. After the revolution, he was made Captain General of Andalusia. Later, he became Captain General of Catalonia, which is a very high military position.

Political Life and Minister of War

Nouvilas was elected as a senator for the Murcia region from 1871 to 1872. A senator is like a representative in the government. He was interested in the loyalty of military members to the new king, King Amadeo.

In 1872, he was elected as a deputy for Seo de Urgel. A deputy is another type of representative in the government. He was re-elected in 1873. As a deputy, he voted for Spain to become a republic in 1873.

On April 30, 1873, he became the Minister of War under President Estanislao Figueras. This meant he was in charge of the country's army. He also led the Army of the North. His job was to stop a new uprising by the Carlists. However, he could not stop them from advancing. He resigned from his positions on June 7, 1873.

Later Life and Writings

Nouvilas did not agree with some government decisions. Because of this, he was sent away again in 1874, this time to the Balearic Islands. He was later moved to the Santa Catalina castle in Cádiz. From there, he was exiled to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He stayed there until 1879 when he was allowed to return to Madrid.

Besides his military and political work, Nouvilas was also a writer. He was the President of the Army's General Ordinance Drafting Board from 1869 to 1871. He wrote books and articles about military tactics. Some of his works include "Elemental Infantry Tactics" (1860) and "The Light Troops in Campaign" (1869).
