What is the Ramshorn Dude Ranch Lodge?
The Ramshorn Dude Ranch Lodge is a special building with a long past. It was originally a "dude ranch," which is a type of guest ranch where visitors can experience a Western lifestyle. These ranches often offer activities like horseback riding, fishing, and hiking. The lodge is known for its rustic style, which means it looks natural and fits in with the beautiful park environment.
Early Days and Founders
The land where the Ramshorn Ranch stands was first settled by Ransom Adams. It was located near the Gros Ventre Canyon. Later, in 1921, Jack and Dollye Woodsman bought the property. They started a dude ranch called the Flying V. This ranch had a large main lodge.
In 1932, the original lodge burned down. Because of this, the Woodsmans sold the ranch in 1935. The new owners were two famous mountaineers: Paul Petzoldt and Gustav Koven. Paul Petzoldt later founded the National Outdoor Leadership School, which teaches people outdoor skills. They planned to make the ranch even bigger. They wanted it to be a climbing school and a hunting camp.
New Name and New Owners
Paul Petzoldt left the partnership in 1937. Before he left, he suggested changing the ranch's name to the Ramshorn Ranch. The current lodge building was finished in 1937. It was built by the Woodward brothers, who then took over running the ranch.
Over the years, the ranch had several different owners and partners. This continued until 1956. At that time, the ranch was sold to the National Park Service. The Park Service then rented the ranch back to other companies. These companies operated it as the Elbo Ranch until 1973.
The Lodge Today: Teton Science School
In 1974, the Teton Science School began using the property. They were given a special permit to do so. Today, the Ramshorn Lodge is the main building for the school's campus in Kelly. It still looks very much like it did when it was built, keeping its rustic charm.
Some other historic buildings have been moved to the Ramshorn property. These structures came from the nearby Hunter Hereford Ranch. They were moved in the 1990s when the residential buildings at the Hunter ranch were taken down. The Ramshorn Dude Ranch Lodge was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 19, 1998. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
