Ranchos de Taos started as a Spanish settlement in 1725. It was first called Las Trampas de Taos. Later, it became known as Ranchos de Taos. People sometimes called it "Taos Old Town."

In 1760, the community faced a difficult time. Comanche Native Americans attacked the settlement. They took 50 women from a fortified house and killed the men.

Spanish settlers in the Taos Valley often moved to the Taos Pueblo for safety. This was to protect themselves from attacks by Plains Indians.

Building the Mission Church

Work on a mission church began in 1772. This church was very important to the community. Between 1796 and 1797, land was given to 63 Spanish families. This land came from the Don Fernando de Taos Land Grant.

The San Francisco de Asis Mission Church was finished in 1815. It is still a very important landmark today. The population of the Taos region grew a lot after Mexico gave out more land grants between 1821 and 1846.
