Randy DuBurke is an American artist born in 1962. He is well-known for writing and illustrating The Moon Ring (2003), which won the Steptoe Award. He also illustrated the book Yummy: the Last Days of a Southside Shorty (2010). Before creating children's books, he worked as a comic book artist in the 1980s and 1990s.

Early Life and Education

Randy DuBurke was born in Washington, Georgia, in 1962. He studied graphic arts at New York Technical College. This education helped him develop the skills he uses in his art today.

Creative Career

DuBurke started his career in the comics world. His first comic story, "A Life in the Day," appeared in Doom Patrol in 1988. He also drew for "Black Canary" in Action Comics Weekly that same year. From 1994 to 2000, he contributed to the "The Big Book Of" series by Paradox Press.

Moving to Children's Books

In the early 2000s, Randy DuBurke began working on children's books. His book The Moon Ring was a big success, earning him the Steptoe Award in 2003. This award recognizes new talent in children's literature.

Graphic Novels and Collaborations

DuBurke worked with writer Andy Helfer on Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography (2006). A graphic biography tells a person's life story using comic book style art and text. This book is often suggested for high school students.

In 2010, DuBurke teamed up with writer Greg Neri to create Yummy: the Last Days of a Southside Shorty. This book tells the story of Robert "Yummy" Sandifer. Many important book reviewers, like Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal, praised the book. The School Library Journal noted that DuBurke's art, especially his use of light and shadow, made the book very powerful.

More recently, DuBurke worked on a graphic novel with famous jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter. This graphic novel was released in August 2018 as part of Shorter's album Emanon.
