History of Ranelagh
How Ranelagh Started
Ranelagh was first developed by a railway company. This company was called the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway. They opened a train station here in 1911. The company also created a special group to plan how the town would grow.
The town was named after Viscount Ranelagh. He was an Irish nobleman who lived a long time ago. He built famous gardens in England called Ranelagh Gardens in 1742.
Early Buildings and Growth
The first ten houses in Ranelagh were finished in 1913. These houses were built in a special style called Tudor. A post office opened in 1915, and the first school started in 1916. This helped the town grow and become a real community.
Sports and Religion
A country club called El Progreso was created in 1924. Later, in 1943, it became the Ranelagh Golf Club. This golf club became very important in the southern Buenos Aires area. The golf course was even named after Roberto de Vicenzo. He was a famous golfer and a longtime member.
A church group, the Mercedarian Order, built a chapel in Ranelagh in 1938. The main church, called Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Our Lady of Mercy), was opened in 1939. The local church leaders officially recognized the Ranelagh Parish in 1941.
Transportation and Businesses
In 1944, a special taxi service, called a jitney, started. It connected Ranelagh to the main city of Berazategui. This made it easier for people to travel.
Ranelagh also became a place for businesses. In 1953, the first factory opened. It was called Zucamor and made corrugated cardboard. Even after a fire in 1957, it grew to become a big supplier of boxes for the Argentine wine industry. In 1958, the Coca-Cola company also opened a bottling plant in Ranelagh.
Becoming a Town and Local Landmarks
In 1967, the government officially recognized Ranelagh as a town. A large area around the train station was turned into a special park for trees. This was thanks to Eva Hajduk. After she passed away in 1984, the park was named in her honor.
A big hospital, the Berazategui Regional Hospital, was built in Ranelagh. It opened in 1994. The town's main newspaper, La Misión, also started in 1994.
