Roberto De Vicenzo (born April 14, 1923 – died June 1, 2017) was a famous professional golfer from Argentina. He won an amazing 229 golf tournaments around the world during his career. This included seven wins on the PGA Tour. His most famous victory was at The Open Championship in 1967.

Many people remember him for a mistake he made in the 1968 Masters Tournament. He accidentally signed a scorecard with the wrong score. This mistake kept him from playing in a tie-breaking round for the championship.

About Roberto De Vicenzo

Roberto De Vicenzo was born in Villa Ballester, Argentina, on April 14, 1923. This town is a suburb of Buenos Aires. He grew up in the Villa Pueyrredón area of Buenos Aires. He learned to play golf by working as a caddie. A caddie is someone who carries a golfer's clubs and helps them on the course. He practiced his golf skills at the Ranelagh Golf Club.

Roberto won his first tournament in Argentina, the Abierto del Litoral, in 1942. He also won the World Cup in 1953. His biggest win was a major tournament, The Open Championship, in 1967.

He is often remembered for what happened at the 1968 Masters Tournament. On the 17th hole, Roberto made a birdie. A birdie means he finished the hole in one stroke less than expected. But his playing partner, Tommy Aaron, accidentally wrote down a 4 instead of a 3 on the scorecard. Roberto signed the card without checking it carefully. According to the rules of golf, the higher score had to be counted. If not for this mistake, Roberto would have tied for first place. He would have played against Bob Goalby in an extra round. Roberto famously said afterwards, "What a stupid I am!"

In 1970, Roberto received the Bob Jones Award. This is the highest honor given by the United States Golf Association. It recognizes excellent sportsmanship in golf.

Later in his career, Roberto played very well on the Senior PGA Tour. This tour is for older professional golfers. He won the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf twice. He also won the first-ever U.S. Senior Open in 1980. In 1974, he won the PGA Seniors' Championship. He played for Argentina 15 times in the Canada Cup/World Cup. He helped Argentina win the World Cup in 1953.

Roberto De Vicenzo was added to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1989. He officially stopped playing golf on November 12, 2006. He was 83 years old and had won over 200 international tournaments. A special Museum of Golf was created in Argentina because of his efforts. It was named in his honor when it opened in 2006.

Roberto De Vicenzo passed away on June 1, 2017, at the age of 94.
