Ranjit Chowdhry (born September 19, 1955 – died April 15, 2020) was a talented actor from India. He was known for playing many different characters in TV shows, movies, and plays.
You might remember him from the popular TV show The Office. He played Vikram, a telemarketer who worked with the main character, Michael. Ranjit was also recognized for his role as Rocky in the 2002 film Bollywood/Hollywood. Another famous role was Dr. Gupta in the 2006 movie Last Holiday, which starred Queen Latifah.
About Ranjit's Life and Acting Career
Ranjit Chowdhry grew up in Mumbai, India, in a family that loved theatre. He went to Campion School, Mumbai and started acting there. His mother, Pearl Padamsee, was a well-known theatre personality and actress.
Ranjit began his movie career in 1978 with the film Khatta Meetha. After that, he appeared in other popular Hindi comedy movies like Baton Baton Mein (1979) and Khubsoorat (1980).
In the early 1980s, Ranjit moved to the United States. He continued acting and even wrote a movie called Sam & Me (1991). This film was directed by Deepa Mehta and received a special mention at the famous Cannes Film Festival.
Ranjit also appeared as a guest star in several American TV shows. Besides The Office, he was in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Prison Break.
Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, who worked with Ranjit on the movie Kaante, shared that Ranjit's acting was always a joy to watch. He even said that Khatta Meetha was his favorite of Ranjit's films.
Ranjit's Family and Later Life
Ranjit's mother, Pearl Padamsee, was a very famous theatre artist and drama teacher. His stepfather, Alyque Padamsee, was also a well-known theatre actor and director. Ranjit had an older sister named Rohini, who sadly passed away when she was young.
Ranjit Chowdhry became unwell and was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on April 14, 2020. He passed away on April 15, 2020, at the age of 64, due to complications from COVID-19. He had been in Mumbai for a dental procedure and was unable to travel back home because of the pandemic.
