Ranulph Neville's Family History
Ranulph was the oldest son of Robert de Neville. His father, Robert, actually died before Ranulph's own grandfather. Ranulph's mother was Mary FitzRanulf. She was one of three daughters who shared the inheritance of Ralph FitzRanulf. Ralph owned Middleham Castle in Yorkshire. This meant Ranulph inherited land and power from both sides of his family. He became the heir to his grandfather, Sir Robert de Neville of Raby, who died in 1282.
Marriages and Children
Ranulph Neville married two times.
First Marriage
His first wife was Euphemia de Clavering. She was the daughter and heir of John de Clavering. John owned Warkworth Castle in Northumberland. Ranulph and Euphemia had fourteen children together. Some of their notable children included:
- Robert Neville (born around 1287 – died June 1319). He was known as the "Peacock of the North." Robert was the oldest son and was expected to inherit his father's titles. However, he died before his father. He was killed in a fight near the walls of Berwick-upon-Tweed by James Douglas, Lord of Douglas.
- Ralph Neville, 2nd Baron Neville (born around 1291 – died August 5, 1367). He became the oldest living son after Robert's death and inherited his father's titles.
- Sir Alexander Neville (died March 15, 1367).
- John Neville (died July 19, 1333). He died at the Battle of Halidon Hill.
- Thomas Neville (born around 1306 – died before June 1349). He became an important church official, the Archdeacon of Durham.
- Anastasia Neville (born around 1285). She married Sir Walter Fauconberg. He died at the Battle of Bannockburn on June 24, 1314.
