Rapla County (also called Raplamaa in Estonian) is one of the 15 main areas, or counties, in Estonia. You can find it in the western part of the country. About 36,678 people lived here in 2009, which was a small part of Estonia's total population.

A Look Back in Time
The first time Rapla was written about was a very long time ago, in 1241. This was in a Danish book called Liber Census Daniae, which was like a big survey of the land.
How Rapla County is Run
Rapla County has its own government, called Maavalitsus in Estonian. A person called a governor (maavanem) leads this government. The Government of Estonia chooses the governor to serve for five years.

Nature and Resources
