Rassi Nashalik is a Canadian journalist who used to host Igalaaq, a news show on CBC North. This show was special because it was broadcast in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit people. In 2021, she was honored by being added to the CBC News Hall of Fame.

Her Early Life

Rassi Nashalik was born on a small island near Baffin Island in Nunavut. She grew up with a large family, having eleven brothers and sisters. For her first ten years, Rassi lived a traditional Inuit life. She spent a lot of time playing outside and traveling by dog sled.

Going to School

When Rassi was ten, she was sent to special schools far from her home. These schools were in Pangnirtung and Churchill, Manitoba.

Her News Career

Before joining CBC, Rassi worked for 13 years at the Language Bureau of the Northwest Territories. This job helped her use her language skills.

Becoming a Newscaster

One day, Rassi saw an advertisement in the newspaper. It was looking for someone who spoke Inuktitut to host a news show. She applied for the job and got it! In 1995, she started hosting Igalaaq.

During her time at CBC, Rassi worked hard to help Indigenous people get jobs at the station. She also encouraged younger Inuit people to speak Inuktitut. In 2014, she decided to retire from being a newscaster.

Awards and Recognition

In 2022, Rassi Nashalik received a very important award. She won the Gordon Sinclair Award for her amazing work in journalism. This award came from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television at the 10th Canadian Screen Awards.

After CBC

After retiring from CBC, Rassi continued to be an important voice in her community. As an Inuk elder, she shared her wisdom.

Helping Others

In 2018, she became an elder-in-residence at the University of Alberta’s School of Public Health. This meant she helped guide students and staff. She also helped start a special wellness camp in Yellowknife. This camp was for First Nations people to support their well-being. In 2021, Rassi was honored again when she was inducted into the CBC News Hall of Fame.
