Raven: The Secret Temple is an exciting adventure game show for children from BBC Scotland. It's a spin-off from the popular show Raven. This series aired in 2007 on the CBBC Channel and later on BBC One in the United Kingdom. In the show, young warriors work in teams. Their goal is to collect as many special jewels as possible by completing 14 tough challenges. These jewels help them find and enter the mysterious Secret Temple.

The Story of the Secret Temple Quest

The story begins with Raven's homeland being frozen by his enemy, Nevar. Raven travels to a faraway land in India with 16 young warriors. They hope to find the Secret Temple. Inside the temple is a magical elixir. This elixir can free Raven's land from Nevar's icy spell.

In this new land, Raven finds a friend named Satyarani. She is a princess who agrees to help Raven and his warriors. But first, the warriors must prove they are worthy. They need to complete 14 dangerous tasks. Only the strongest warrior will be able to enter the temple and get the elixir.

However, Nevar and his evil demons have followed Raven. They want to stop the warriors from finishing their quest.

How the Game Works

Just like the main Raven series, this show features many challenges. The 16 warriors compete, and some are eliminated along the way. But in Raven: The Secret Temple, the warriors are split into teams of four. Each team has a different color and a special animal symbol:

  • The Panthers (purple)
  • The Eagles (red)
  • The Wolves (orange)
  • The Tigers (yellow)

Each team also has a leader. The leaders were chosen after two challenges at the start of the series. Every day, the teams complete one of 14 different challenges. They try to win jewels. These jewels are very important because they can be used to bring a team member back into the game if they get eliminated.

Unlike the main Raven series, warriors don't have "lives." If a warrior is eliminated during a challenge, they are out. Satyarani, who sets the rules, says a warrior can return if their team uses eight jewels. But this can only happen once for each warrior. If a warrior is eliminated a second time, they cannot be brought back, even if the team has enough jewels.

Meet the Characters

  • Raven (James Mackenzie): Raven is back! He travels to the Eastern land to guide the 16 warriors. His main goal is to find the Secret Temple and the sacred elixir. He also has to protect his warriors from Nevar and his demons.
  • Nevar (played by Nageswara Rao): Nevar is the mysterious, dark enemy. He froze Raven's homeland. Now he follows Raven to the East to stop the warriors. He commands an army of demons. He also uses a special "all-seeing eye" (a dish of water) to spy on Raven and the warriors. Satyarani calls him the "Dark One."
  • Satyarani (Tara Sharma): Satyarani is Raven's friend and helper. She is a princess who lives in the Eastern land. She can even move through the air like a dust cloud! She guides the warriors through their challenges. Satyarani is sometimes tougher than Raven. She often questions the warriors about their choices at the start and end of each day.

The Warriors and Their Teams

Sixteen warriors began the quest, with four in each team. Each warrior was given a special warrior name, often a mix of letters from their real first and last names. The teams have unique colors for their flags and outfits.

The tables below show the teams and their warriors. A yellow cell means the warrior made it to the finals. Gold shows the winner, silver is for second place, and bronze is for third.

The Challenges

To enter the Secret Temple, the warriors must show seven important virtues. Each virtue has two challenges, making 14 challenges in total. In each challenge, four jewels can be won.

Speed Challenges

  • Temple Spirit Run: Warriors must grab bags hanging from the ceiling. Some bags have sand, but four have jewels. They need to find a jewel and give it to a spirit guard before time runs out. If they fail, they are eliminated.
    • Eliminations: Tibor (Wolves) and Yonra (Panthers). Yonra was brought back.
  • Waters of Time: Warriors must quickly carry water to long containers. Filling the containers raises a jewel. They must grab the jewel before a drum beats a second time, or they are eliminated.
    • Eliminations: Jenro (Tigers). He was not brought back because his team didn't have enough jewels. He also hurt his hip.

Strength Challenges

  • Obelisks Of The Sun: Warriors must rebuild a broken statue by carrying pieces up a hill. They need to finish before time runs out. If they succeed, sunlight creates a jewel. If not, they are eliminated.
    • Eliminations: Arton (Panthers). He was brought back.
  • Chariots: Warriors sit in chariots and pull a rope to move forward. They must collect tube pieces to build a long tube. This tube helps them unhook a jewel bag hanging high up. If they don't get the jewel and return in time, their quest ends.
    • Eliminations: Arton (Panthers) and Hadav (Tigers). Neither could be brought back because they had been eliminated before. Lymel (Wolves) got heatstroke, so Desot got her jewel for her.

Agility Challenges

  • Bridge/Stepping Stones: Warriors must cross a path of rocks without touching the ground. They collect jewel bags along the way. If they touch the ground, they are out. "Bridge" challenges give them wooden planks to help. "Stepping Stones" challenges mean they have to jump.
    • Eliminations: Yeada and Samra (Eagles), and Lymel (Wolves). Lymel couldn't be brought back. Only Yeada was brought back for the Eagles.
  • Thrall Threads: Warriors must move through a tangled web of threads. If they touch a thread, bells ring, alerting spirit guards. This leads to elimination. Jewel bags are hidden in tricky spots.
    • Eliminations: Lymel and Nebra (Wolves), Marca (Tigers), and Taylan (Eagles). Nebra was not brought back, but the others were.

Courage Challenges

  • Pillars Of Courage: Warriors must cross gaps between tall pillars. If they fall or lose courage, their quest ends. Jewel bags hang above each pillar for brave warriors to reach.
    • Eliminations: Hadav (Tigers) was brought back.
  • The Ledge: Warriors must walk along a thin ledge high up on a building. If they lack courage or fall, they are eliminated. Jewel bags can be found above their heads.

Leadership Challenges

  • Enchanted Demons: Warriors pick up ropes connected to a hook in the center of a circle. They use the hook to grab a casket with jewels. Spirit guards usually sleep, but they wake up when the ropes are taken. They start pacing faster and faster. If a guard touches a warrior or their rope, that warrior is eliminated.
  • Field of the Dead: One warrior is blindfolded and guided by another through a field. Jewel bags are hidden. The blindfolded warrior must avoid touching swords, weapons, skulls, or fallen men, or they will be eliminated.
    • Eliminations: Desot (Wolves) and Sonro (Panthers) were both brought back. Aksu took Sonro's place as leader for the Panthers.

Wisdom Challenges

  • Rangoli Ring: Warriors must draw missing symbols in circles to complete a pattern. If they draw correctly, they can collect jewels from a pillar in the center. If they make a mistake, fire erupts.
    • Failures: The Wolves team.
  • Riddle Trap: Satyarani reads a riddle. Warriors must solve it and find the matching symbol in their book. Then, they walk across a path using only that symbol. They collect four jewels at the end. Two spiked walls then close in, and they must get back before being trapped. Stepping on the wrong symbol loses jewels.

Accuracy Challenges

  • Giant Catapult: Warriors use a giant catapult to fire rocks. They try to knock down as many of the four jars containing jewels as possible.
  • Archery: Warriors fire 12 arrows at targets that open and close. They aim to make jewel bags drop. They also need to watch out for spirit guards coming closer from behind.

The Gulley Challenge

After the 14 tasks, Satyarani allowed the team with the most jewels to go straight to the finals. The other three teams had to complete "The Gulley" challenge. This challenge involved crawling under ropes and pulling shields on ropes. Finally, they had to climb over a wall of boulders. Three warriors were eliminated in The Gulley: Aksu and Yonra (Panthers), and Desot (Wolves). They did not move on to the final challenges.

Temple Challenges

The remaining warriors then faced more challenges. They formed one big team, first led by Yeada. If a warrior was eliminated in these challenges, their quest ended. Yeada was the first to be eliminated. Then Taylan became the leader. After Taylan was eliminated, the warriors rolled dice to choose a new leader, and Sohar won.

During this time, Raven started to worry. He thought he saw demons walking through the Citadel walls, even though Satyarani said they couldn't. Raven felt frustrated that he couldn't protect his warriors more. Satyarani explained that these tests were showing who the strongest warriors were. For example:

  • Vajra Scales showed who could think clearly.
  • Snakes and Ladders showed who had strong survival instincts.
  • Catapult Drop showed who could stay calm under pressure.

Raven was surprised that a warrior could be eliminated by chance in "Snake Charmer." But Satyarani said it was a test of courage.

First Day in the Temple

  • Citadel Gates: Warriors had to solve a riddle. The answer's letters matched symbols that opened the Citadel gates.
  • Alchemist's Potion: Warriors solved a riddle to buy the right ingredients from a marketplace. They mixed them into six bottles, one for each warrior.
  • Golden Stone: Warriors poured their potions into a bowl. Symbols briefly appeared in a fire on a stone. Warriors had to remember these symbols and write them down.

Second Day in the Temple

  • Statues: Warriors used the symbols they wrote down to find the correct statue among three. They made the right offering to get a scroll.
  • Vajra Scales: Warriors had to balance scales by pouring sand into trays. Mirrors in a second set of scales turned black over time. Warriors needed to balance their scales to get a mirror. If the scales were unbalanced, they were eliminated.
  • Snakes and Ladders: This challenge was like the board game. A Snake Demon moved around the board. Warriors rolled dice to move. If the demon landed next to a warrior, they went back to the start. Warriors could also choose another player to take their turn once.
    • Yeada nominated Marca to take her move. Marca escaped, but Yeada was sent back and eliminated by the demon.
  • Catapult Drop: Warriors had to hit a target on a wall. This released a rope. They used the rope to climb down a building, collecting parchments with symbols. At the end, the rope disappeared, trapping them.

Third Day in the Temple

  • No Way Out: Trapped, the warriors put their parchment pieces together. This revealed a new riddle. Symbols also appeared on the wall. Warriors had to find and touch pairs of symbols that matched the parchment. They had to touch all pairs at the same time, even using their feet! When they touched the symbols, a gap appeared. They then built two columns from broken pieces. This opened a portal back to the Citadel.
  • Sign in the Sand: Back in the marketplace, Satyarani showed them a snake-like symbol. Warriors searched for it and found it on a man's headscarf. They paid him, and he played a tune they had to memorize.
  • Snake Charmer: Warriors listened to three snake charmers. They had to pick the one playing the tune they memorized. Then, they each chose one of five baskets. Four baskets were empty and led to the Temple. One basket had a snake, ending that warrior's quest.
    • Taylan chose the basket with the snake and was eliminated. This challenge was based on luck.

Fourth Day in the Temple

  • Chamber of the Red Demons: Warriors had to find four amulets hidden in the walls. They also used mirrors (from Vajra Scales) to reflect light into demons' eyes, keeping them calm.
  • The Door to the Underworld: To enter the inner sanctum, warriors solved a riddle to line up three wheels blocking the door.

At this point, Raven decided to join the warriors. Satyarani agreed but warned him not to enter the final chamber. If he did, the walls would collapse, as only mortals could enter. Raven waited outside.

  • Cave of Fear: Each warrior entered the cave to find a key. Keys were hidden in a hole of cockroaches, a pot of snakes, a bowl of slime, and a demon's skeletal hand.

While this happened, Satyarani began to summon Nevar.

  • The Way of the Dead: Warriors followed a path over planks on stepping stones. When a warrior reached the end, their path disappeared.
    • Karja was eliminated when her board snapped halfway through the challenge.

The Final Challenge

  • Chamber of the Three-Headed Serpent: A riddle showed the warriors their path. They stepped across symbols that spelled "serpent." They picked up a ring and placed it on a long serpent. They then balanced and walked across the serpent, avoiding swinging maces.
    • Sohar and Marca both fell from the snake and were eliminated. The last warrior, Sonro, climbed a rope to get a special vessel.
  • Well of the Three-Headed Serpent: Sonro had to fill the vessel with the elixir. This elixir would free Raven's homeland. The elixir bowl was surrounded by snakes. Sonro then had to go back across the snake path and symbols.

Satyarani told Raven that two of the three warriors were lost. Raven was determined to protect Sonro. Satyarani warned Raven that looking into the chamber was okay, but stepping inside would make it collapse.

However, in Escape from the Underworld, Nevar appeared and tried to eliminate Sonro with his Staff of Power. Raven stepped in, and a battle began. This allowed Sonro to escape with Satyarani's help.

  • Time of Reckoning: Sonro had to solve one last riddle. He needed to enter a three-digit number correctly on a spindle. The correct number would open the right portal to freedom. The wrong number would open a portal to doom.

Sonro entered the correct number and escaped! Raven and Nevar fought. Raven managed to overpower Nevar for a moment. He offered Nevar a chance to heal himself with the elixir in the temple. But Nevar tried to attack Raven again, forcing Raven into the temple. This caused the temple to collapse.

Outside, Satyarani congratulated Sonro but told him Raven was lost. However, Raven then appeared! He had transformed into his bird form and escaped, flying faster than a man could run.

Sonro received a Golden Staff for winning. He was given the title: "Sonro, Guardian of the Golden Staff, Hero of the Eastern Land, Conqueror of the Secret Temple." Raven took the elixir to restore his homeland. Satyarani returned to her land, and Sonro and Raven began their journey home.

Nevar seemed to have died in the temple ruins. But at the end of the credits, his eye opened beneath his mask. This showed that he was not defeated after all!
