Ray Frenette's Early Life and Political Start
Joseph Raymond Frenette was born on April 16, 1935. His parents were Berthilde Pitre and Samuel Frenette. Before he became a member of the provincial legislature, he was involved in local government.
Serving His Community
Mr. Frenette started his political journey as a Councillor for the village of Lewisville. Later, Lewisville joined with the city of Moncton. At that point, he became a city Councillor for Moncton. This showed his dedication to serving his community.
Becoming a Provincial Leader
Ray Frenette wanted to lead the Liberal Party of New Brunswick. He tried twice to become the party leader. In 1982, he ran but lost to Doug Young. He tried again in 1985, but Frank McKenna won that time.
Interim Leader and Premier
Even though he didn't win the leadership right away, Mr. Frenette played a big role. He served as the temporary leader of the party from 1983 to 1985. He did this again from October 1997 to May 1998. During this second time, he also served as the Premier. The Premier is like the head of the government for the province.
Working with Frank McKenna
Ray Frenette was a very trusted helper for Frank McKenna. Mr. McKenna was the leader of the Liberal Party from 1985 to 1997. During this time, Mr. Frenette was the "House Leader." This meant he helped manage the party's work in the legislature. He resigned from the New Brunswick legislature in July 1998.
After His Time in Politics
After leaving provincial politics, Ray Frenette continued to serve Canada. The Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chrétien, appointed him to a special role.
Leading Atomic Energy of Canada
Mr. Frenette became a director at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). This is a company that works with nuclear energy. He served as a director from 1998 to 2001. After that, he became the chairman of the company from 2001 to 2005. This was a very important job.
Supporting Other Leaders
On May 11, 2006, it was announced that he would help with a political campaign. He was the New Brunswick chairman for Gerard Kennedy's campaign. Mr. Kennedy was running to become the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.
