Freddie Ray Marshall (born August 22, 1928) is an American economist. He is a respected professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a special teaching position there.

Ray Marshall's Early Life and Education
Ray Marshall was born in 1928 in Oak Grove, Louisiana. When he was young, he lived in an orphanage. At just fifteen years old, in 1943, he joined the United States Navy. He served his country during World War II.
After the war, he went to college. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Millsaps College. Then, he received a Master of Arts from Louisiana State University. He later earned his PhD in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. A PhD is the highest degree you can get in a field of study.
His Important Work and Career
Ray Marshall has had many important jobs in universities. Since 1962, he has worked at the University of Texas. However, he took a break from teaching for a very important role.
From 1977 to 1981, he served as the United States Secretary of Labor. This job is part of the President's team. He worked for President Jimmy Carter. As Secretary of Labor, he helped create more public service jobs. He also expanded job-training programs. These programs were part of President Carter's plan to help the economy.
In 1986, Ray Marshall also helped start the Economic Policy Institute. This group studies the economy and suggests ways to make it better for everyone.

Ray Marshall has written several books about important topics. These books share his knowledge and research.
