His Early Life
Raymond was born in Paddington, London. His father was Sir Maurice Bonham-Carter, who was a politician and played cricket. His mother was Lady Violet Bonham Carter, who was a strong voice in politics. She was later given the special title of Baroness Asquith of Yarnbury.
Raymond's grandfather was H. H. Asquith. He was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. He later became the 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith.
Raymond had older siblings named Cressida, Laura, and Mark. He went to school at St. Ronan's School and Winchester College. He then studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, finishing in 1952. After that, he continued his studies at Harvard University in the United States.
His Career as a Banker
Raymond Bonham Carter had a successful career in finance. He held several important jobs. From 1958 to 1963, he worked at the Bank of England. This is the central bank of the United Kingdom.
He also worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1961 to 1963. The IMF helps countries around the world with their money matters. Later, he worked for Warburgs, a well-known investment bank, from 1963 to 1977. He also spent time at the Department of Industry from 1977 to 1979.
His Family Life
In 1958, Raymond married Elena Propper de Callejón. Her father was a Spanish diplomat named Eduardo Propper de Callejón. Elena's mother was Hélène Fould-Springer, who had French and Austrian Jewish roots.
Raymond and Elena had three children together:
- Edward Bonham Carter (born May 24, 1960) is a successful businessman. He is the Vice Chairman of a company called Jupiter Fund Management.
- Helena Bonham Carter (born May 26, 1966) is a very famous actress. She has been nominated for an Academy Award twice.
- Thomas Bonham Carter manages a company that helps businesses with their rules and management.
Facing Challenges
In 1979, Raymond was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Doctors were able to remove it with surgery. However, the surgery left him unable to move his arms and legs well (quadriplegic). It also affected his eyesight, making him partially blind.
Raymond Bonham Carter passed away on January 17, 2004.
