Rebecca Julie Lingwood was born in August 1970. She is a very important leader at Lancaster University. There, she holds the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Before this, she was a top professor at Brunel University London. She taught about how liquids and gases move. This field is called fluid dynamics. She also has a special connection with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. In 2019, she became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This is a big honor for engineers.

Early Life and Education

Rebecca Lingwood studied engineering at the University of Cambridge. She finished her first degree in 1992. She was a student at Sidney Sussex College. She continued her studies at Cambridge. In 1995, she earned her PhD. Her advanced degree was in fluid dynamics. After that, she received a special scholarship. It was called the Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship. From 2004, Lingwood worked as a research engineer. She also managed aerospace projects. This work was done at the Begbroke Science Park.

Career in Universities

Rebecca Lingwood joined the University of Oxford. She became the Director of Continuing Professional Development. She worked at Oxford for six years. In 2009, she moved back to the University of Cambridge. There, she became the Director of University of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education. She also became a Fellow at Homerton College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, she worked with Cambridge University Health Partners. They helped create a special school. It was a University Technical College.

In 2015, Lingwood became a Professor of Fluid Dynamics. She also became the Vice Principal for Education. This was at Queen Mary University of London. In this role, she helped students succeed. She also worked to improve staff excellence. Her research looked at how smooth fluid flow changes. It changed into a more swirling, turbulent flow.

In 2018, Lingwood joined Brunel University London. She became the Provost and Professor of Fluid Dynamics. She still has a special role at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. At Brunel, she studied boundary layers. These are thin layers of fluid. They form near spinning surfaces. One example is Kármán’s rotating-disk flow. In 2019, she gave a special talk. It was the Royal Aeronautical Society Lanchester Lecture. She was the first woman to give this important lecture.

In July 2024, Lingwood started a new role. She joined Lancaster University. She is now the Deputy Vice-Chancellor there.

Helping the Academic World

Lingwood was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2019. This is a very respected title. She also has an honorary fellowship. This is from Kellogg College, Oxford. Lingwood is a trustee for the Daphne Jackson Trust. This trust helps people return to research careers. In 2019, she announced something important. Brunel University London joined a special group. It was the Cabinet Office Open Innovation Partnership. She is also working with the University of Bath. They are looking at how well university senates work. A senate is a governing body in a university.

Lingwood is also on the editorial board. This is for a science journal. It is called Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.
