The red-tailed leaflove is a type of bird. It belongs to the bulbul family, which is called Pycnonotidae. Scientists know it as Phyllastrephus scandens. You can find this bird in western and central parts of Africa. It's called a "leaflove" because it often stays hidden among leaves.

About Its Name and Family

Scientists group living things into families and genera. This helps us understand how they are related. The red-tailed leaflove's scientific name is Phyllastrephus scandens.

How Its Name Changed

This bird was first placed in the Phyllastrephus group. For a short time, from 2009 to 2010, some scientists moved it to a group called Pyrrhurus. Now, Pyrrhurus is part of Phyllastrephus again. Some experts still use the old Pyrrhurus name for it.

Other Names for This Bird

The red-tailed leaflove has a few other names. People sometimes call it the African leaflove or the common leaflove. It is also known simply as the leaflove or plain leaflove.

Different Types of Red-tailed Leafloves

There are two main types, or subspecies, of the red-tailed leaflove:

  • Uele leaflove (P. s. scandens): This type lives from Gambia and Senegal all the way to northern Cameroon. William Swainson first described it in 1837.
  • Gabon leaflove (P. s. orientalis): This type was first described as a different species. It lives from northern Cameroon to southern Sudan, central Uganda, western Tanzania, and the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Gustav Hartlaub described it in 1883.

The red-tailed leaflove is found across western and central Africa. It likes to live in certain places.

Its Natural Home

This bird's natural habitat includes warm, wet lowland forests. It also lives in moist savanna areas. Savannas are grasslands with scattered trees.
