Sharp drop-off with lush trees in Red Bluff, Mississippi

Red Bluff is an amazing natural place in Marion County, Mississippi. Many people call it Mississippi's Little Grand Canyon because it looks like a smaller version of the famous Grand Canyon! It's a big, colorful cliff that overlooks the Pearl River. You can find it about 1.5 miles northwest of a community called Morgantown.

How Red Bluff Was Formed

Red Bluff is a natural wonder created by the power of water and time. It's on the west side of the Pearl River. Imagine the river slowly wearing away the land over many, many years. This process is called erosion.

The bluff is made up of different layers. You can see red clay, soil, sand, and other colorful sediments. These are tiny bits of rock and dirt that have settled there over time. The top of the bluff is about 371 feet (113 meters) above sea level.

From the top, the land drops sharply down about 200 feet (61 meters) to the flat area near the Pearl River. This natural erosion is still happening! It's so powerful that it has even forced a nearby road, Mississippi Highway 587, to be moved at least two times to keep it safe.

Visiting Red Bluff

When you look out from Red Bluff, you can see a large part of the Pearl River area in Marion County. You can also spot the eastern side of the city of Columbia, Mississippi.

The land where Red Bluff is located is privately owned. This means that walking or hiking directly on the bluff is not allowed. However, you can still enjoy the amazing view! There are special roadside parking areas along Mississippi Highway 587 where you can stop and see the bluff from a safe distance.
