Redlake Meadows & Hoggs Moor is a very special place in Cornwall, England. It is known for its amazing plants and animals. Because of this, it's called a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Inside this SSSI, there's also a part called Redlake Cottage Meadows. This area is a nature reserve that is cared for by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Where is Redlake Meadows?

This special area is about 30.5 hectares big. That's like 75 football fields! It is located in a place called St Winnow parish.

Redlake Meadows is about 1.5 kilometers (or 1 mile) east of the town of Lostwithiel. It sits between two smaller rivers that flow into the River Lerryn. The nature reserve, Redlake Cottage Meadows, covers about 13 hectares (32 acres) in the middle of the SSSI.

Amazing Plants and Animals

Redlake Meadows & Hoggs Moor is home to some very rare and important species.

Rare Plants

One rare plant found here is the heath lobelia (Lobelia urens). Another nationally scarce plant is the Wavy-leaved St John's-wort (Hypericum undulatum). You can also find yellow bartsia (Parentucellia viscosa).

Marsh Fritillary Butterfly

This site is very important for the marsh fritillary butterfly. This butterfly is considered a vulnerable species, which means it needs protection. In 1995, after these butterflies were seen here, the Cornwall Wildlife Trust received help. They got a grant from the Hanson Environment Fund. This money helped them protect the butterflies by clearing bushes and putting up fences.

How the Site is Managed

To help keep the habitat healthy for all these species, 10 native breed ponies have been brought to the site. They help manage the land by grazing.
