The Cornwall Wildlife Trust is a special group that works to protect nature in Cornwall, England. It started in 1962 to look after Cornwall's amazing wildlife. This includes animals, plants, rocks, and their natural homes.

The Trust manages over 50 nature reserves. These are special protected areas, like Looe Island. They cover a huge area, about 17.4 square kilometers. The Trust works to protect nature both on land and in the sea.

How the Trust Started

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust began in 1962. It was first called the Cornwall Naturalists' Club. Its main goal was to protect Cornwall's wildlife and natural places. This includes both land and sea environments.

Some important people helped start the Trust. They were Frank Turk, Stella Turk, and Jean Paton. The Trust is part of a bigger group. This group is called The Wildlife Trusts partnership. It includes 46 wildlife trusts across the United Kingdom.

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust also works with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust. They sometimes team up on projects. The main office for the Trust is near Truro in Cornwall. It is right next to their Five Acres nature reserve. This reserve has two ponds and different kinds of trees. As of August 2025, Matt Walpole is the chief executive. Volunteers who are elected help run the Trust. Oliver Blount is the current chairperson.

What the Trust Does

The Trust works hard to protect Cornwall's wildlife and natural places. They manage more than 50 nature reserves. These reserves cover a large area, about 17.4 square kilometers. Looe Island is one of these special places.

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust also publishes a magazine. It is called Wild Cornwall. This magazine comes out three times a year. The Trust's work follows a plan for Cornwall's Biodiversity. Biodiversity means all the different kinds of life in an area.

Two big projects are called Living Seas and Living Landscapes. The Trust also runs ERCCIS. This is a huge database for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It keeps records of all the animals and plants seen. It also records information about geology. The Trust gives advice to people who are building things. This helps make sure new buildings don't harm nature.

In 2024, the Trust received a large grant. It was £265,000 from the National Lottery. They might get even more money later. This money helps them start a new project. It is called the Tor to Shore project. This project aims to help nature grow back in certain areas.
