Breney Common is a special place in the middle of Cornwall, England. It's a nature reserve, which means it's a protected area where plants and animals can live safely. It's also known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of its unique wildlife.

This amazing area is mostly found in the Lanlivery parish. A famous walking path called the Saints' Way even goes right through it! Breney Common is part of a bigger protected area called the Breney Common and Goss and Tregoss Moors Special Area of Conservation. This means it's important for nature not just in the UK, but across Europe too.

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust looks after Breney Common. They work hard to protect the land and all the creatures that call it home.

What Makes Breney Common Special?

Breney Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This title is given to places that have rare plants, animals, or geological features. For Breney Common, it's all about the amazing variety of living things found there.

The area has different types of habitats, like wet moorland and heathland. These habitats are perfect for many unique species. You might find special insects, birds, and plants that don't live in many other places. Protecting these areas helps keep these species from disappearing.

Why is it a Special Area of Conservation?

Being a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) means Breney Common is recognized as a very important natural site across Europe. This protection helps to make sure that the habitats and species found here are looked after for a long time. It's like a super-important nature reserve!

History of Breney Common

Breney Common has been recognized as an important natural area for many years. It used to be part of a larger protected site called the Red Moor–Breney Common SSSI.

In 1986, experts decided to split these two areas. Both Breney Common and Red Moor were then expanded to protect even more land. Today, Breney Common is one of three nature reserves close to each other. The others are Red Moor and Helman Tor. These connected areas create a large safe space for wildlife in Cornwall.
