Redlands is an old farmhouse located near Circleville, a city in south-central Ohio. This large and important house was built in the mid-1800s. Today, it is recognized as a special historic site.

A Historic Ohio Farmhouse

Redlands was built in 1858. It was the home of Jacob Valentine, one of the richest farmers in Pickaway County. The main house is made of bricks. These bricks were actually made right there on the farm!

The house also has a strong foundation and other parts made of stone. Some other buildings on the property are covered with wooden boards.

Design and Style

The way Redlands was built, along with its many fancy decorations, shows how wealthy landowners lived before the Civil War. It has a beautiful front porch built in the Greek Revival style. This style was popular for grand homes.

You can also see special window-like parts called transoms above the windows and doors. The house has big, impressive fireplaces and a grand stairway at the front.

Protecting History

Besides the main house, the Redlands property includes three other buildings. Two of these are very old and were built by 1860. They show a simple, local building style. The third building is newer and not considered historic.

In 1982, Redlands was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States. It was chosen because its old architecture was very well-preserved. The main house and the two old outbuildings are considered "contributing" to its historic value. The newer building is not.

It was very important that Redlands was still a complete "gentleman's estate" from before the Civil War. This means it kept its original look and feel from that time.
