Reed Point was named after a man named Harry Reed. He and his wife, Alice, ran a stage station here for many years.
Early Journeys and Challenges
Around 1876, the Reeds traveled by covered wagon to the Black Hills. They later joined a group heading to the Big Horn and Yellowstone valley in 1877. Their journey was tough. They faced attacks from Native Americans and many hardships.
The group reached the Yellowstone River around the time Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce tribe were in the area. The famous Battle of Canyon Creek happened nearby.
Life and Changes
Harry Reed worked with a timber crew. Alice Reed worked at ranches and stage stations along the Yellowstone River. In 1878, they moved to Coulson, Montana. Harry Reed carried mail to Fort Custer. Sadly, he died a few months later.
Alice Reed then washed clothes to make a living. In 1881, she married John Schock. He was in charge of the McAdow Ferry at Coulson.
Becoming a Town
The post office in Reed Point was first set up in 1901. It was simply called "Reed" then. In 1906, the name changed to Reed Point. Bob Guthrie planned the town in 1911. A new bridge was built over the Yellowstone River that same year.
