This park has lots of cool things to do! There are basketball courts, tennis courts, and fields for sports. It also has playground equipment for younger kids and a picnic shelter. What makes Reedville Creek Park special is that it was the first park in Hillsboro to have a skatepark.
Park History
How the Park Started
In 1999, the city of Hillsboro bought a piece of land to build a new park. This land was about 9.6 acres and used to be a filbert orchard. It was located right next to Reedville Creek. That same year, the city decided to build a skatepark, but they hadn't picked a spot yet.
In 2001, the city's parks department made final plans for the new park. These plans included parking, basketball courts, sports fields, tennis courts, and a playground. And yes, the skatepark was also part of the plan!
Building the Skatepark
In 2002, the city asked people living nearby for their ideas on how to design the skatepark. At this time, the park was officially named Reedville Creek Park. The city wanted to make sure skateboarding and inline skating were popular before building a big skatepark.
Many people, especially teenagers, sent in over 100 suggestions for the skatepark. They wanted features like steps and rails, which are like things skateboarders find in city streets. Mike McIntyre and his team at SITE Design Group were hired to design it. The skatepark grew to be about 18,000 square feet!
Opening Day
The city started building Reedville Creek Park in June 2002. They hired a company called Corp Inc. to do the work. By the end of 2002, the concrete ramps for the skatepark were already in place. Finally, in February 2003, the entire park and its skatepark officially opened to the public!
When the skatepark opened, many skateboarders from all over the Portland area came to try it out. It was a big deal because it was Hillsboro's first skatepark. Over the years, the park has hosted many events, like skateboarding camps and tennis camps.
At first, only skateboarders could use the skatepark. But in 2010, the city tried letting people with bicycles and scooters use it too. After a 90-day trial, they made this change permanent. Now, more people can enjoy the skatepark!
