The Reform Monument is an important stone structure in Peterhead, Scotland. It stands on Broad Street, where it meets Longate. This monument was built a long time ago, in 1833.
It is a special kind of building called a Category B listed monument. This means it's officially recognized as a building that is important to history and should be protected.
What is the Reform Monument?
The Reform Monument is a tall, impressive column. It looks like a Roman Doric column, which is a classic style of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. These columns are known for their simple, strong design.
At the very top of the column, you can see the "arms" of Earl Marischal. These "arms" are like a special symbol or crest belonging to a noble family. The design for these symbols was inspired by the old gateway of Inverugie Castle. One historian, Charles McKean, noted that these arms were taken from the castle.
Why is it Called the Reform Monument?
The monument is named after the idea of "reform." In the 1800s, there was a big movement in Britain for political reform. This meant people wanted to change how the government worked. They wanted more people to have the right to vote and have a say in their country's future.
The Reform Monument was built to celebrate these important changes. It reminds us of a time when people worked together to make society fairer. It stands as a symbol of progress and the power of people to bring about change.
Not to Be Confused!
Peterhead has another important structure called the Reform Tower. It is located in the Meethill area of the town. It's easy to get them mixed up!
However, the Reform Tower was built a year earlier than the Reform Monument. So, while both are related to the idea of reform, they are two different landmarks in Peterhead.
