Reggie Abercrombie's Baseball Journey
Reggie Abercrombie finished high school at Columbus High School. He was chosen by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1999 Major League Baseball draft. However, he decided to go to Florida Gateway College first. He officially signed with the Dodgers on May 24, 2000.
Later, in 2004, Reggie was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Then, in 2005, the Florida Marlins picked him up. He had a really good spring training in 2006, hitting well and showing he could get on base. Because of his strong performance, the Florida Marlins brought him up to play in the major leagues.
Playing for the Florida Marlins
It was a bit of a surprise when Reggie joined the major leagues. He had only played a little bit above Single-A baseball before. Even though some people didn't think he would be a big star, the Marlins had high hopes for him.
In 2006, Reggie was part of a team with many other new players. This group did much better than people expected. Reggie had some great moments, but he didn't become a regular starter for the Marlins that year. He played in 281 at-bats and had a batting average of .212.
Reggie's Longest Home Run
On April 19, 2006, Reggie Abercrombie hit a very impressive home run. He was playing against the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park. The ball traveled an amazing 486 feet! This was one of the longest home runs ever recorded by Hit Tracker Online at that time.
In the 2007 season, Reggie played less in the major leagues. His hitting wasn't as strong, with a .197 batting average. He spent most of that season playing for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes. There, he hit much better, with a .323 batting average.
Time with the Houston Astros
On October 11, 2007, the Houston Astros picked up Reggie from the Marlins. He was sent to the minor leagues in March 2008. But then, on June 7, his contract was bought, and he joined the main team again.
He was sent back to the minors about a month later, but then recalled by the Astros on August 9. Even though he only had 60 at-bats in the major leagues that season, he played well. He finished the 2008 season with a .309 batting average. Reggie re-signed with the Houston Astros in January 2009. He played the entire 2009 season with their AAA team, the Round Rock club.
Playing in Independent Leagues
After his time in Major League Baseball, Reggie Abercrombie joined the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball in 2010. He signed with the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants. Fans in Sioux Falls really liked him because he helped the team reach the championship series. He also became an All-Star that year. In 2010, he hit 22 home runs and had a .328 batting average.
In 2011, Reggie continued to play well, hitting .304 with 17 home runs. For the next two years, 2012 and 2013, he played for both the Sioux Falls team and teams in the Mexican League. In 2012, he hit .293 with 17 home runs combined. In 2013, he hit .292 with 18 home runs.
Reggie joined the Winnipeg Goldeyes for the 2014 season. He hit 15 home runs and had 74 runs batted in. He played for a few different teams in 2015, including the Goldeyes again.
Besides playing in the major and minor leagues, Reggie also played in winter leagues. These included the Arizona Fall League, the Mexican Pacific League, the Puerto Rican Winter League, and the Dominican Winter League.
On December 7, 2015, it was announced that Reggie would return to the Winnipeg Goldeyes for the 2016 season. He helped the Goldeyes win two league championships in a row! Reggie retired from playing baseball after the 2019 season.
On August 11, 2023, the Winnipeg Goldeyes honored Reggie Abercrombie by retiring his number 11 jersey. This means no other player on the team will wear that number again, showing how important he was to the team.
