Reginald Damascus Abercrombie (born July 15, 1980) is an American former professional baseball player. He was an outfielder, which means he played in the part of the baseball field farthest from home plate. Reggie played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Florida Marlins and Houston Astros.

Reggie Abercrombie's Baseball Journey

Reggie Abercrombie started his baseball career after graduating from Columbus High School. The Los Angeles Dodgers picked him in the 1999 Major League Baseball draft. However, Reggie decided to go to Florida Gateway College first. He officially signed with the Dodgers in May 2000.

Later, Reggie was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2004. The Florida Marlins then picked him up in 2005. He had a really good "spring training" in 2006. This is when players practice before the season starts. Because he played so well, the Marlins called him up to play in the big leagues.

Reggie joining the Major League team was a bit of a surprise. He had only played a little bit above the lowest level of professional baseball. The Marlins had high hopes for him. In 2006, he joined a team with many other new players. This group did much better than people expected.

Even though Reggie didn't become a regular starter for the Marlins, he had some amazing moments. On April 19, 2006, he hit a home run that traveled 486 feet! A home run is when a batter hits the ball out of the field, allowing them to run around all the bases and score a point. This was one of the longest home runs ever recorded at that time.

In 2007, Reggie played less in the Major Leagues. He struggled a bit with his hitting. But when he played for the Triple-A team, the Albuquerque Isotopes, he hit very well.

Playing for the Houston Astros

On October 11, 2007, the Houston Astros picked up Reggie. He was sent to their minor league teams for a while. But he was called back up to the main Astros team in June 2008. He played well in the limited time he had with them.

Reggie re-signed with the Astros in 2009. He spent that whole year playing for their Triple-A team, the Round Rock club. After that season, he became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team.

Playing in Independent Leagues

In 2010, Reggie joined the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. This league is not connected to Major League Baseball teams. He played for the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants. He became a very popular player there. He helped his team reach the championship series and was even chosen for the All-Star Game. He hit 22 home runs that year!

Reggie continued to play well in independent baseball. In 2012 and 2013, he also played in the Mexican League. He hit many home runs and helped his teams score lots of runs.

In 2014, Reggie joined the Winnipeg Goldeyes. He played very well for them too. He later played for a few other teams, including the Sussex County Miners and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

Besides playing in the Major Leagues and independent leagues, Reggie also played baseball in other countries. He played in winter leagues in places like Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

Reggie returned to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in 2016. He helped the Goldeyes win two league championships in a row! He decided to retire from playing baseball after the 2019 season.

On August 11, 2023, the Winnipeg Goldeyes honored Reggie by retiring his number 11 jersey. This means no other player on the team will wear that number again, as a tribute to his great contributions.
