Reginald M. Oliver (born October 20, 1951 – died August 14, 2018) was an important figure in American football. He was both a talented player and a coach. Oliver is especially remembered for his time as a quarterback at Marshall University and for his connection to a sad event in sports history.
Reggie Oliver's Football Journey
Reggie Oliver played college football as a quarterback for Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. He played there from 1970 to 1973. A quarterback is the player who leads the team's offense and throws the ball.
A Tragic Event and a Survivor
In 1970, a terrible plane crash happened that involved many members of the 1970 Marshall Thundering Herd football team. This accident sadly took the lives of many players and coaches. Reggie Oliver was one of the few team members who was not on that plane. This meant he survived the tragedy.
His story and the story of the team were later told in a movie. The 2006 film We Are Marshall showed what happened to the team. In the movie, actor Arlen Escarpeta played the role of Reggie Oliver.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Reggie Oliver became a football coach. He served as the head football coach for Alabama A&M University in 1994. During his time as head coach, his team had a record of 4 wins and 7 losses.
