Sir Reginald Hanson, 1st Baronet (born May 31, 1840 – died April 18, 1905) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party. One of his most important roles was being the Lord Mayor of London.

Sir Reginald was born to Samuel and Mary Hanson. He went to excellent schools like Tonbridge School and Rugby School. Later, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, a famous university. His headmaster at Rugby School, Dr. Frederick Temple, spoke highly of him. He said Reginald was a very dutiful and respected student. This strong sense of duty stayed with Sir Reginald throughout his life.

Early Career and Public Service

After finishing university, Reginald Hanson joined the Commercial Union Assurance Company. His father, Samuel, had helped start this company. Reginald quickly became a director there. He also joined his family's business, Samuel Hanson & Son Limited, which was a wholesale grocery company.

Roles in London Government

Sir Reginald took on many important jobs in London.

  • From 1880, he was an Alderman for the area of Billingsgate. An Alderman is a senior member of a city council.
  • In 1881–82, he served as Sheriff of London. A Sheriff helps keep law and order and supports the Lord Mayor.
  • From 1882 to 1885, he was part of the London School Board. This board helped manage schools in London.

Lord Mayor of London

In 1886, Sir Reginald Hanson was chosen to be the Lord Mayor of London. This is a very old and important role, like being the chief representative of the City of London. During his time as Lord Mayor, Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. This was a big celebration for her 50 years as Queen.

In 1887, Sir Reginald hosted Queen Victoria at the Mansion House, which is the official home of the Lord Mayor. The Queen made him a Baronet, which is a special title of honor. He had already been knighted, another honor given by the Queen. Famous guests at the Mansion House that day included the explorer Henry Morton Stanley.

Political Life and Military Honor

Sir Reginald Hanson also served as a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the City of London in the British Parliament from 1891 to 1900. As an MP, he helped make laws for the country.

He also had a connection to the military. In 1882, he was made an Honorary Colonel of the 4th (Royal London Militia) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. This was a special title given to him to recognize his public service.

Later Life

Sir Reginald Hanson passed away in 1905. He was buried in Highgate Cemetery in London. He left behind two sons, Gerald and Francis, and two daughters, Violet and Maud. His sons also went on to have successful careers.
