Reginald I (also known as "the One-eyed") was an important leader in the Middle Ages. He was the Count of Bar from 1105 to 1149. The region of Barrois, where he ruled, is now part of eastern France, close to Lorraine.

Who was Reginald I?

Reginald I was born around 1080. His father was Theodoric I, Count of Montbéliard, and his mother was Ermentrude of Bourgogne. Her father was William I, Count of Burgundy.

His Family

Reginald I married Gisele de Vaudémont. She was the daughter of Gérard I, Count of Vaudémont. Gisele had been married before to Rainard III, Count of Toul.

Reginald and Gisele had eight children together:

  • Hugh de Bar (who passed away in 1141)
  • Reginald II, Count of Bar (who later became Count)
  • Drogo de Bar
  • Dietrich III de Bar (who became the Bishop of Metz)
  • Agnes de Bar (who married Albert, Count of Chiny)
  • Clemence de Bar (born in 1123, passed away in 1183). She married three times: first to Alberic II, Count of Dammartin, then to Renaud, Count of Clermont, and finally to Thibaut III de Crépy.
  • Mathilde de Bar (who married Konrad I, Count of Wildgraf von Kyrburg)
  • Stephaine de Bar (who passed away in 1178). She married Hugh III, Seigneur of Broyes and Châteauvillain.

A Leader in the Second Crusade

Reginald I was one of the main leaders of the Second Crusade. This was a big religious war that started in 1145. He traveled with many other knights and soldiers to the Holy Land.

Sadly, Reginald I did not make it back home. He drowned in the Mediterranean Sea on his way back to Europe. This happened on or before March 10, 1149.

Passing on the Title

Reginald I became Count of Bar after Theodoric II of Bar, who ruled from 1092 to 1105. After Reginald I passed away, his son, Reginald II, Count of Bar, took over as Count in 1150. Reginald II ruled until 1170.
