What is the Museum's History?
After the Community of Madrid was created in 1983, it took charge of cultural things in 1985. People realized that Madrid needed its own special museum for archaeological finds, even though the National Archaeological Museum, Madrid was already there.
In 1985, they chose an old convent called La Madre de Dios in Alcalá de Henares as the perfect spot for the new museum. Work on the building started in 1987, and the museum finally opened its doors on May 25, 1999.
What Can You See at the Museum?
The museum has many interesting things from different times in history.
Ancient Animals and Bones
You can see some very old bones and fossils, which are called paleontological findings. One amazing item is a skull from a cave bear. This skull was found in a place called Patones in 1971. It's the biggest cave bear skull ever discovered in the whole Iberian Peninsula (which is where Spain and Portugal are).
Roman Treasures
A big part of the museum is about the Roman period. This includes many pieces with ancient writings, known as epigraphic pieces. There is also a large collection of beautiful Roman mosaics. These mosaics came from Complutum, which was the Roman name for the city of Alcalá de Henares long ago.
