The Registan Desert, also called the Rigestan Desert, is a large desert in Afghanistan. It is located in the southwestern part of the country. This desert lies between the Helmand and Kandahar provinces. It is mostly a sandy desert. You can find small, red sandhills there. These hills are usually about 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 m) (15 to 30 meters) high. There are also flat areas covered with sand. Some parts of the desert have open rocky and clay ground.

Who Lives in the Registan Desert?

A few groups of people live in the Registan Desert. These include Baluchi and Pashtun people. They are often nomads. Nomads are people who do not have a permanent home. Instead, they move from place to place. They usually travel with their animals, like camels or goats. They move to find food and water for their animals. Life in the desert can be very challenging for them.

How the Desert is Changing

The Registan Desert is slowly growing bigger. This process is called desertification. It means the desert is starting to spread into nearby areas. These areas used to be used for farming. When the desert expands, it covers the fertile land. This makes it harder for people to grow crops. It also reduces the amount of land available for animals to graze. This change can be caused by things like climate change. It can also happen if people use the land too much. For example, if too many animals eat the plants, the soil can become dry. This makes it easier for the desert to take over.
