The beautiful gardens at Mount Stewart in County Down are on the Register.

The Register of Parks, Gardens and Demesnes of Special Historic Interest is a special list of important parks and gardens in Northern Ireland. These places are chosen because they have a lot of history or are very beautiful.

This list is looked after by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA). The NIEA is a government group that works to protect nature and history in Northern Ireland. They are part of the Department of the Environment.

What is the Register?

The Register was started in 1999. It grew from an earlier list made in 1992 that had over 700 places. To be added to the Register, a park or garden must meet ten special rules.

Why are places added to the Register?

Places are added to the Register for many reasons. These include their importance in history, how special their plants are, their amazing buildings, or their ancient discoveries.

How many places are on the Register?

Today, the Register includes 154 important sites. There are also 150 "supplementary sites" that are also noted. If a place is on the Register, it means it is very important when new building plans are being made nearby.
