Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales facts for kids
The Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales is a special list of important historic parks and gardens in Wales. Think of it like a "hall of fame" for amazing outdoor spaces! This list helps protect these places for everyone to enjoy. It is looked after by Cadw, which is the Welsh Government's service for historic places.
What is the Register?
This important list was finished in 2002. However, new parks and gardens are still being added if they are special enough. The places on the Register are given a grade based on how important they are. These grades are I, II*, and II. This is similar to how historic buildings are listed to show their importance.
Right now, there are almost 400 sites on the Register. About 10 out of every 100 sites are Grade I, which means they are super important. And 23 out of every 100 are Grade II*, which also means they are very special.
Other Registers in the UK
Wales isn't the only place that keeps a list of its amazing parks and gardens! Other parts of the United Kingdom have their own special lists too:
- In England, the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens is looked after by English Heritage.
- In Scotland, the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland is kept by Historic Scotland.
- In Northern Ireland, the Register of Parks, Gardens and Demesnes of Special Historic Interest is maintained by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.
