The Gardenia remyi, also known as the nānū or Remy's gardenia, is a type of flowering tree. It belongs to the madder family, which is scientifically called Rubiaceae. This family includes many plants, like coffee!
What is Remy's Gardenia?
Remy's gardenia is a special tree that grows only in Hawaiʻi. When a plant or animal lives only in one specific place, it is called endemic. This means you won't find Remy's gardenia growing naturally anywhere else in the world!
Where Does It Live?
This tree likes to live in different kinds of Hawaiian forests. It can be found in:
- Coastal mesic forests: These are forests near the coast that get a medium amount of rain.
- Mixed mesic forests: These forests are a mix of different tree types and also get a medium amount of rain.
- Wet forests: These are very rainy forests.
Remy's gardenia grows at different heights, from about 60 to 760 meters (200 to 2,500 feet) above sea level. You can find it on the islands of Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, Maui, and the Big Island.
Why Is It in Danger?
Sadly, Remy's gardenia is a critically endangered plant. This means there are very few of these trees left in the wild. The main reason it is in danger is habitat loss. This happens when the places where the trees naturally grow are destroyed or changed, often by human activities like building or farming. Protecting these forests is very important to help Remy's gardenia survive.
