Carlos Renato Frederico (born February 21, 1957), known simply as Renato, is a former Brazilian football player. He was an offensive midfielder, which means he played in the middle of the field to help both defend and attack. Renato was known for his skill and vision on the field.

Renato's Club Career

Renato played for many different football clubs during his career. He started playing professionally in 1975. His first club was Guarani, where he played until 1980.

Playing for Top Brazilian Teams

After Guarani, Renato joined São Paulo from 1980 to 1984. He then played for Botafogo in 1985. From 1986 to 1989, he was a key player for Atlético Mineiro.

Success in Brazil

Renato helped his teams win several important championships in Brazil.

  • He won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (Brazil's top national league) with Guarani in 1978.
  • With São Paulo, he won the São Paulo State Tournament twice, in 1980 and 1981.
  • He also won the Minas Gerais State Tournament twice with Atlético Mineiro, in 1986 and 1988.
  • In 1987, Renato received the Brazilian Silver Ball Award. This award goes to one of the best players in the Brazilian league each year.

Playing Football in Japan

Later in his career, Renato moved to Japan. He played for Nissan Motors, which later became Yokohama Marinos, from 1989 to 1992. He also played for Kashiwa Reysol in 1993. In Japan, he won the Japan Soccer League Division 1 in 1990.

Later Career Clubs

After his time in Japan, Renato returned to Brazil. He played for Ponte Preta from 1994 to 1996. His last club was Esporte Clube Taubaté in 1997, before he retired from playing.

Renato's International Career

Renato also represented his country, Brazil, on the international stage. He played for the Brazilian national team from July 1979 to October 1983. During this time, he played in 22 international matches and scored three goals.

Playing in the World Cup

He was part of the Brazilian squad for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. This is one of the biggest football tournaments in the world. Even though he was on the team and sat on the substitute's bench for several games, he did not get to play in any matches during that tournament.

Renato achieved several important awards during his career, showing his skill as a player.
