Renishaw Hall is a beautiful old country house located in Derbyshire, England. It's near the village of Renishaw, not far from Sheffield and Chesterfield. This special house has been the home of the Sitwell family for almost 400 years! It's also a Grade I listed building, which means it's very important historically and architecturally.

The Story of Renishaw Hall

Renishaw Hall was built in 1625 by a man named George Sitwell. He was an important person in the area. In 1653, he became the High Sheriff of Derbyshire. This was a big job, like being the main law enforcement officer for the county.

The Sitwell family became very wealthy. They made their money from owning coal mines and working with iron. This business helped them from the 1600s all the way to the 1900s.

Over the years, the house changed a bit. Between 1793 and 1808, Sir Sitwell Sitwell had major changes made. Joseph Badger of Sheffield added new parts to the west and east sides. Later, in 1908, another famous architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, made more updates.

The house stayed in the Sitwell family. In 1965, Sir Osbert Sitwell gave the house to his nephew, Sir Reresby Sitwell, 7th Baronet. Sir Reresby owned it until 2009. Then, he passed it on to his daughter, Alexandra Hayward.

What the House Looks Like

Renishaw Hall was built in different stages. This means it doesn't have a perfectly regular shape. It's made from strong sandstone found in coal measures. Some parts are smooth, cut stone called ashlar. Other parts are rougher, called coursed rubble.

The house has crenellated walls at the top. These look like the tops of old castles, with gaps and raised sections. It also has tall, pointed decorations called pinnacles. The roofs are slanted and covered with slate tiles.
