Republic of the Floridas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Republic of the Floridas was a small country that existed for only a few months in 1817. It was also called the Republic of Floridas. The name "Floridas" meant it included both East Florida and West Florida, which were Spanish lands at the time.

This attempt to create an independent Florida was led by a Scottish adventurer named Gregor MacGregor. He was joined by a French adventurer, Louis-Michel Aury, and a Scot, Richard Ambrister. MacGregor managed to take control of Amelia Island, which was the only territory this new republic ever had. He raised the Green Cross of Florida flag over the Spanish Fort San Carlos on the island.

Why the Republic of Floridas Was Formed

The people who started the Republic of the Floridas wanted to create a new, independent country. They aimed to free Florida from Spanish rule. This was part of a bigger movement where many parts of Latin America were trying to gain independence from Spain.

The American Takeover of Amelia Island

The United States government was worried about what was happening on Amelia Island. They believed that the island was being used to smuggle goods, like enslaved people, into the U.S. without paying taxes. This would cause the U.S. government to lose money.

Because of these concerns, the United States decided to take control of Amelia Island. In December 1817, U.S. troops moved in and took possession of the island.

On January 13, 1818, President James Monroe told Congress about the takeover. He said that the situation on Amelia Island had been "suppressed" (meaning stopped) without any fighting or bloodshed. This action showed that the U.S. did not want independent groups setting up countries so close to its borders.

What Happened Next

The Republic of the Floridas lasted only from June to December 1817. After the U.S. took over Amelia Island, the republic ended.

Even though it was very short-lived, the Republic of the Floridas did create some official documents. On December 9, 1817, a "Report of the Committee Appointed to Frame the Plan of Provisional Government for the Republic of Floridas" was printed in Fernandina. This document was like a plan for how their temporary government would work.
