Requesens Castle facts for kids
Requesens Castle is an old building found in a town called Cantallops in Catalonia, Spain. It's a special kind of castle that looks like it's from a storybook.
This castle has three layers of walls, one inside the other, to protect it. It also has towers that are both square and round, big doorways, and special parts on top of the walls called merlons. These merlons are the up-and-down shapes you often see on castle walls, used for defense. Inside the lowest part of the castle, there's a small chapel. This chapel has parts that are very old, built in a style called Romanesque, which was popular a long time ago.
The Castle's Story
Requesens Castle has been around for a very long time. People think it might have existed as early as the 800s. The first time we see it mentioned in writing was in the 1000s. This was in a document from Ponce I, who was the count of a place called Ampurias back then.
For many years, the castle became old and ruined. But in the 1800s, it was rebuilt. The people who rebuilt it wanted it to look like a medieval castle again, even though it was a new building. This style is called "neo-medieval," meaning "new medieval." The castle was used a lot after the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). During that time, some new parts were added to the old structure.
