Reset (computing) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

In the world of computers and other electronic devices, a reset is like giving the system a fresh start. It clears away any problems or errors that might be happening and brings the device back to its normal, starting condition. This is usually done when a device isn't working right, and other ways to fix it haven't worked. For example, if a computer program gets stuck and doesn't respond, a reset can help it begin again.

Hardware Reset

Most computers and electronic gadgets have a special way to reset their hardware. This is often a hidden signal that tells the device to go back to its starting point, just like when you first turn it on. This signal is usually active for a short time right after you power on a device.

Resetting a device puts less stress on its parts than completely turning it off and on again. Many older computers, and even some newer ones, have a "reset" button that you can press. This button sends the reset signal, forcing the computer to restart even if the operating system is frozen.

Many parts inside digital devices, like memory chips and counters, also have a reset signal. This signal sets them back to a specific starting state. This is often used when the device first turns on, but it can also happen at other times.

It's really important for electronic devices to be able to reset themselves if something goes wrong or if they suddenly lose power. This is a key part of how embedded systems work. You can see this with everyday electronics like your television, audio equipment, or even parts of a car. If these devices suddenly lose power, they can usually start working correctly again once power is restored because they perform a reset.

Sometimes, if a device is acting strangely, simply unplugging it and plugging it back in (or removing and reinserting batteries) can fix the problem. This makes the device perform a reset. Some devices, like portable media players, often have a special reset button because they can sometimes freeze or lock up. Without a proper way to reset, a device might become useless after a power loss or a malfunction.

On Apple MAC computers, there's a special key combination, similar to the Control-Alt-Delete on Windows computers, that allows you to reset the system.
