Restless is an exciting spy novel written by William Boyd. It was published in 2006 and won the famous Costa Prize for fiction.

This book tells the story of a young woman who finds out her mother was a secret agent during World War II. The story jumps between different times, making it a thrilling mystery. It also changes who is telling the story, from "I" to "he/she."

William Boyd, the author, said that Restless is one of the first novels to talk about the British Security Coordination service in New York. Many people became interested in the book when it was picked for 'Book Club 2007' on the UK TV show Richard & Judy.

What the Story is About

The main character is Eva, a young Russian woman. After her brother dies, she is asked to work for the British secret service. This means she becomes a spy!

While working as a spy, Eva falls in love with her boss, Lucas Romer. But Romer is secretly a double agent, working for both sides. This leads to a dangerous plot where someone tries to kill Eva, and other agents lose their lives.

The book also tells the story of Eva's daughter in the 1970s. She slowly learns about her mother's secret life as a spy. The story takes place in many cool locations like London, Oxford, Scotland, other parts of Europe, and the United States.

TV Show Adaptation

In December 2012, the BBC made a two-part TV show based on the novel. It was produced by Hilary Bevan Jones and directed by Edward Hall. Famous actors like Hayley Atwell, Rufus Sewell, Michelle Dockery, Michael Gambon, and Charlotte Rampling starred in it.
